Creative Skills

Creativity is about more than choosing the colors for a painting or drawing. It is a way of thinking, problem solving and applying knowledge as well.

Many people assume that creativity is something children are born with and either do or do not have. But in reality, creativity is more skill than inborn talent, and it is a skill parents can help their kids develop.

Creativity is about more than choosing the colors for a painting or drawing. It is a way of thinking, problem solving and applying knowledge as well. From their earliest days, babies respond to contrasts, colors, sounds, and movements.

How they integrate these various experiences will influence their growth and development across many areas, including creativity. In this way, creativity is ageless and timeless. And more importantly, creativity can be acquired, and fostered.

Creative play and activities have a central role in children’s overall learning and development. Kids typically enjoy expressing ideas and exploring their world through songs, dress-ups, art materials, language and movement.

Creative play and activities have a central role in preschoolers overall learning and development. Preschoolers typically enjoy expressing ideas and exploring their world through songs, dress-ups, art materials, language and movement. They love to express themselves and their ideas using crayons, paints, playdough, clay, scissors, glue and paper. As children develop, their artworks start to contain more and more detail. Drawings of people are usually still basic figures at this stage. Realistic shape, scale and other details come a little later. Activities that can help in your 4 year old’s Creative skill development:

  • Ask your child to create a pattern while running, jumping, clapping his hands, raising hands or jumping on one foot.
  • Ask your child to describe or draw people or objects. The drawing can be of a bike, a policeman, his father or his favorite toy. This will help in fostering his imagination.
  • Ask your child to identify whats missing from a picture such as a face without nose. And then ask him to draw it to complete the picture.
  • Create a box where you place all creative outlets for drama and play. It can include old items, clothes, puppets or stuffed animals. This provides easy access for your child to pretend, imagine and express himself.
  • Ask your child to pretend being an animal. Alternate a loud animal with a quite one. For example ask him to be a bear, then snake. The objective here is to discover patterns, develop imagination and facilitate role play.
